As New Orleans gears up for its favourite time of year, Mardi Gras, Slap Ya Papa are bringing the spirit of the Southern states to Hackney to get rid of those January blues. The gang are putting on two nights of live Louisiana music and soul food. The menu includes chargrilled oysters, gumbo with Andouille smoked sausage and finishing with whiskey jelly and pralines 'n' cream. As they say down NOLA way, let the good times roll! Tickets cost £30 from here, you can keep the party going as it's BYOB and it takes place in a warehouse in Vyner Street from 7.45pm.
Over on the other side of the world (and the outer-reaches of Hackney), Cordon Bleu chef Guan Chua - AKA The Boy Who Ate The World - is putting on a Nonya dinner, a cuisine that brings together the best of Chinese and Malay cooking. Guan's going to be using some of skills he showed off when he appeared on Channel 4's The Taste cooking show in his decadent eight-course meal. On the menu tonight: fried tamarind prawns, spicy noodle salad with mint and shrimp, the captain's chicken curry, braised caramelised pork belly and finishing with banana and praline parfait. Tickets cost £38 from here and the dining all kicks off at 7pm in the Jenius Social venue.
Guess what? It's Burn's night on Sunday. *Insert annual, generic Robert Burns quote here* Look, the important things to know are he was a Scottish writer and it's your chance to start drinking again, legit, in Dry January. KERB Clubhouse over in Hackney Wick are going all out for the night on Saturday, and are renaming it the Clubhoos (lolz) and putting on a special night of dining and drinking in Rabbie's honour. A £40 ticket gets you a dram o' Scotch on arrival, then - amongst other treats - haggis neeps and tatties, the haggis McBleeker burger and battered smoked haggis with baconised kale. Which sounds most excellent, if you're a fan of haggis. There's also live music, pipes and even some Highland games, which will be most amusing after a few whisky cocktails. Tickets available from here and it runs from 6pm - 11pm.
